Canon Setting: Bleach takes place on Earth, principally in the town of Karakura, Japan but also in the afterlife realm of Soul Society and elsewhere. In this world, the dead usually go to Soul Society to eventually be reincarnated, but lingering ghosts can, after enough time spent on Earth, turn into vicious monsters called Hollows. It's up to a group of supernatural warriors from Soul Society called Shinigami to police the world, sending reluctant ghosts on to the next life and defeating Hollows before they can cause too much damage.

The Shinigami are based out of Seireitei, a heavenly city located in the center of Soul Society. Most of them are members of the Gotei 13, an organization of thirteen squads, each with their own dedicated duties and areas of the mortal world to patrol. Each squad is headed by a Captain and has several officers and enlisted, much like a contemporary army. Rank and file Shinigami are formidable fighters, but higher ranks, especially Captain-class, are capable of causing massive amounts of destruction when the need arises. Seireitei's laws and society are very strict and steeped in tradition, and people stepping outside of their bounds can face dire repercussions.

Aside from Soul Society, there exists Hueco Mundo, the realm of Hollows, where vastly-powerful Hollows called Menos rule over their lesser kin. Thanks to the actions of a renegade Shinigami, Sousuke Aizen, hybrid Menos infused with Shinigami powers called Arrancar reign supreme there. Likewise thanks to Aizen, there also exists a small group of Shinigami infused with Hollow powers called the Vizard that, until Aizen's defeat, operated outside of Soul Society's jurisdiction.

On Earth, there also exists a race of anti-Hollow warriors called the Quincy. A thousand years ago, the Quincy were a mighty empire, but their method of destroying Hollows disrupted the natural order of death and reincarnation, and the Shinigami clashed with them, leading to their leader entering a coma and the Quincy to lie low in their hidden realm, the Wandenreich. The Shinigami tried to reason with the survivors, but eventually, their swelling numbers disrupting the cycle led to a near-complete purge of the entire race. In modern times, the Quincy king Yhwach finally awoken from his thousand year sleep, absorbing the lifeforce of many of the remaining Quincy and gathering those that remained to be his army, the Sternritter, in a final war against Seireitei.

Character History: Wiki link!

Character Personality: Juushirou is a good man. Being good is his entire driving force in life, to always do the right thing and be a bright, shining example to everyone around him. To him, there is nothing more important than to do the right thing, always, no matter how difficult it may be. To allow an injustice to take place, even if it goes against his personal desires or the laws of the land, is unacceptable, as is clearly shown in him struggling without rest to attempt to save Rukia Kuchiki to the point where he commits open rebellion against the Captain-Commander, a man he regarded with so much respect he was practically a father to him. To Juushirou, allowing Rukia to be executed under the circumstances that led up to her sentencing, particularly with the very odd events that took place in Seireitei in the days preceding her execution, was worth fighting against his mentor, no matter how long the odds against victory may have been. Likewise, even if he didn't like that it was necessary, he still provided Ichigo Kurosaki, the person responsible for Rukia still being alive, with a badge meant to monitor and restrict his powers, while telling the boy it was nothing but his official license as a substitute Shinigami. As much as he owed Ichigo, there was no denying that his power was alarming, and it was better to be safe than sorry.

A strong advocate for peaceful resolution, Juushirou will only draw his sword when there is no other choice but to fight. Even when confronted with opponents not amenable to talking out their differences with him, he's still reluctant to resort to deadly force. Honor and pride weigh heavily on him when placed in a life or death situation, whether they be his own, his enemy's, or those fighting alongside him: to fight in the presence of a child, let alone to fight that child, is abhorrent to him, and even when his own lieutenant is caught in a fight he can't hope to win, Juushirou forbids interference as it is the man's wish to fight alone. These facts can easily be exploited, he knows it, but to disregard these principles would go completely against his personal code, and he won't be changing any time soon.

Life isn't always struggling to right the wrongs of the universe for him, though. In normal, peaceful times, Juushirou is an extremely popular, eminently-friendly man. Highly-perceptive, he's quick to notice when someone is disturbed, and he will happily offer assistance whenever he can. Whereas some would expect him to be bitter and frail due to his illness, Juushirou hasn't allowed it to rule his life in the least, choosing instead to live his life to the fullest. He's known throughout Soul Society as one of the most cheerful, noble people around, treating everyone from the Captain-Commander down to the freshest recruits at the Academy with the utmost respect. While some Gotei 13 squads are run cold and methodically, the members of the Thirteenth are like a second family to him, with every last one of them being quite dear to him. In response to his beneficence, the Thirteenth treats him as their beloved father, sometimes competing among themselves for his favor, much to his amusement. He strives to be known as a friend to all, frequently delivering gifts to anyone he thinks will enjoy them (whether they actually enjoy them or not), and he's always willing to listen if anyone needs an ear.

If Juushirou has any weaknesses, aside from his stubborn refusal to break his own moral code, it is his emotions. As mentioned earlier, when placed on the spot and required to make a decision, he allowed his lieutenant, Kaien Shiba, to battle a Hollow that he could not defeat, as Kaien's pride as a warrior and as a husband was on the line, and it goes against his code to intercede when help is not wanted. This emotional response eventually led to Kaien's death, a devastating blow to Juushirou that weighed even heavier on his shoulders since he knew he could have interfered and saved him. Several examples exist of Juushirou losing his temper and growing angry when he's frustrated, and he frequently expresses exasperation with people that can't see eye to eye with him over what he considers to be the right thing to do. In his mind, there is seldom a situation where one way to act is no less right than another, and not taking that right path is just plain illogical.

Character Powers & Skills:

Juushirou is a Captain-level Shinigami, and this comes with quite a few powers and abilities.

  • Extraordinary Physical Abilities - Shinigami have much higher durability than humans by default, but Juushirou stands high above most in reaching the rank of Captain and living for centuries with a chronic illness like he has. He can stand up to all but the most devastating of attacks, and is capable of batting away weaker energy attacks with his bare hands. With this comes heightened strength and agility, far beyond a mortal human's, although Juushirou's illness has caused him to lag behind many Shinigami in these two departments.
  • Sword Mastery - Juushirou is quite competent with a sword. This is a learned skill, give him any katana and he'll be good with it.
  • Kidou Mastery - Juushirou is a master of Kidou, Shinigami magic. There are dozens of Kidou spells, a complete list of which can be found here. Kidou are found in three varieties: Bakudo (Way of Binding) spells that bind foes or create barriers, Hado (Way of Destruction) spells that directly attack the foe, and Kaido (Turn Way) spells used for healing. Juushirou has been shown to be adept at Bakudo and Hado spells, but hasn't been shown to have any skill in Kaido.
  • Shunpo Mastery - Juushirou is a master of Shunpo, a Shinigami technique that allows movement so quick it borders on teleportation. Shunpo can be chained together to allow incredibly rapid transportation at only a minor depletion of spiritual energy.
  • Massive Spiritual Power Reserves - As befitting one of the oldest and most experienced Shinigami alive, Juushirou's reserves of spiritual energy (or reiatsu) are said to be rivaled only by Shunsui and Captain-Commander Yamamoto himself. This energy is used to power Kidou, Shunpo, allow standing in mid-air by focusing it on the bottom of the feet, and other Shinigami abilities.
  • Soul Sensing - Shinigami have the ability to sense the reiatsu of other spiritually-powered beings. The more spiritual power they have, the easier it is to sense them, and it's possible to pick out specifically who someone is from the feeling of their reiatsu.

  • Zanpakutou - Like all Shinigami, Juushirou possesses a Zanpakutou, a sword bound to his soul with its own set of special powers. Juushirou's is called Sogyo no Kotowari (Truth of Pisces). On its own, Sogyo no Kotowari is a masterwork katana; if damaged, it will mend itself over time.
  • Shikai - Sogyo no Kotowari's true power is unleashed in its shikai, or first release. When released, the sword splits into two long, strangely-shaped blades connected by a rope-like chain with smell metal charms dangling from it. In addition to the normal benefits of dual-wielding swords, Juushirou gains the ability to absorb any energy-based attack fired at him through the left blade, channel and magnify its power through the chain, and fire it right back at its source through the right sword.
  • Bankai - It has been revealed that Juushirou does have a Bankai, an extremely powerful secondary release of his Zanpakutou, but its nature is not known in canon. As such, he simply won't be invoking it at any point.

CHARACTER SAMPLES.
First Person POV: Hope this does it!

Third Person POV:

Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto was dead.

Those words echoed in Juushirou's head time and time again, but no matter how many times he thought them over, he could not parse that they were true. His mind rejected the idea of the Captain-Commander being no more, that a man whose lifespan had spanned two millennia had been snuffed out in a single day. Yamamoto was always there, always ready to lead the Gotei 13 in their hours of crisis, and now, when his presence was needed more than ever on the eve of catastrophe, he was gone.

Seated on the floor in the foyer of his office at the Thirteenth Division headquarters, Juushirou's face was lined with worry as he stared blankly at the floor beneath him. All of Soul Society was in shock after the Wandenreich's surprise attack, left to lick their wounds and mourn their dead. Those that fought and survived were taken away by the Zero Division, taken to their lofty realm far above to be healed, including Rukia. The damage his lieutenant had suffered in the fighting had been severe, and the weight of her unknown condition was nearly as heavy on his shoulders as the death of Yamamoto. Logically, Juushirou knew that this was no time to succumb to his woes, that Soul Society needed its leaders to stand strong, but after what they had faced, hope felt so fleeting.

Dark thoughts were interrupted as Juushirou heard the door across from him open. He pushed aside his woes in a hurry, placing a weak but not altogether grim expression on his face, and looked to his visitor. "Just in time, Kotetsu-" he started speak, then paused. This was not the person he'd been expecting: as a matter of fact, this was no member of the Thirteenth at all. Juushirou could not say he recognized the man standing before him, and there were no identifying marks on his shihakushou to identify his division. Who was this, then? Another messenger come bearing bad news?

"Captain Ukitake," the strange Shinigami cleared his throat and invited himself to speak up while Juushirou sat in curious thought, "I've been tasked to inform you that a method of saving the Seireitei, Soul Society, and even the entire Earth is available, and to acquire your cooperation in seeing to it that it is carried out."

Naturally, Juushirou's eyes widened upon hearing this news. No one would play a prank at a time like this, not when there was so much riding on the line, so this had to be serious. A way to push the Quincy back and save the whole of Soul Society? What could he mean? And, what threat was facing the Earth that it was so important to include it in the message?

Before he could get a word out to ask those questions, the Shinigami gave a curt bow. "I'm afraid there's no time to explain more, Captain. Your presence is needed, urgently and immediately, to ensure the safety of the world. Will you come with me, sir?"

The message was one of hope, but something felt odd about it. The way the man spoke, the way he carried himself, it didn't say he was lying, but Juushirou couldn't help but think there was so much that wasn't being said. Cryptic as it all was, however, if this was a genuine situation that needed his presence to save everything that he held dear, there was only one possible response. Mark his words, he'd deal with the perpetrators later if this was some sort of hoax, but if there was even the slightest chance this was genuine...

"Yes, of course. Where shall we go?"
